ABOUT ABOUT

Join The Black Creators Collective for our 2022 Director's Showcase, as we take the audience on a deep exploration of the Black American experience through the lens of six powerfully prolific and contemporary playwrights. Scenes will be featured from the following plays:

Sugar in our Wounds by Donja R. Love
A romantic drama about two male slaves who find love in each other’s arms as the American Civil War rages. But is love powerful enough to set your true self free?

American Menu by Don Wilson Glenn
It's May 1968 and five Black female restaurant workers serve in the kitchen of a “whites only” Texas diner. Between the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, the air is fraught with momentous events, nationally, locally and personally.

Blues for Mr. Charlie by James Baldwin
In a small Southern town, a white man murders a black man, then throws his body in the weeds. With this act of violence–which is loosely based on the notorious 1955 killing of Emmett Till–James Baldwin launches an unsparing and at times agonizing probe of the wounds of race.

Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Park
Lincoln and Booth, who, abandoned by their parents, have had to depend upon each other for survival since they were teenagers. Now in their 30s, the brothers struggle to make a new life, one that will lead them out of generational poverty.

The Brothers Size by Tarrell Alvin McCraney
In the Louisiana bayou, Ogun Size is the hardworking and steady brother to the younger Oshoosi. Ogun worries constantly about his brother, who's fresh out of prison and restless. When Elegba, Oshoosi's old prison-mate arrives with a gift, their relationship is thrown out of balance.

Thoughts of a Colored Man by Keenan Scott II
As the sun rises on a single day in the pulsing heart of Brooklyn, seven Black men are about to discover the extraordinary – together. Their vibrant and vulnerable experiences and feelings reverberate far beyond the barbershops and basketball courts of their community. They reveal the deeply human hopes, joys, sorrows, fears, and dreams of all men, all people.
